PIWIES
This is the abbreviation for “fungal-resistant grape varieties”, which enable us to significantly reduce the use of plant protection products.
They have a strong resistance to real and false mildew, fungal diseases already in the 19th century. Jhd. from America. American or Asian wild vines are crossed with resistance to the aforementioned fungal diseases with European vines, which ensure good wine quality. From the crossing to the admission often takes up to 20 years. Since the plant protection measures can be reduced by up to 80 percent, both CO 2 emissions and soil compaction are reduced. Time and cost savings are another important factor. Often a dry location is also well tolerated.

ROTER HANG®
World-famous terroir
Coming from Nackenheim, the Red Hang moves along the Rhine, then makes a sharp crease in Nierstein in the direction of Schwabsburg. There it ends after approx. 5 km long on the plateau of the former Schwabsburg Castle. Here are also the two vineyards “Orbel” and “Schloss Schwabsburg” in a southern exposition. The red rock from the Permian time is approx. 280 million years old and a real heat storage. This benefits in particular by the late-maturing Riesling. At the end of the Tertiary ago approx. 30 million This veteran of the Rhine Hesse stone slowly returned to the surface in Nierstein by upgrading the earth’s crust floe. The further emergence of the Red Hang was involved in the collapse of the Upper Rhine Graben and the cutting of the river into the landscape. The barren clay sandstone, similar to a slate floor, produces wines with fine minerals. The roots must be deeply immersed in the history of the earth to feed the vine. Our Rieslings talk about this about the Red Hang. Our yoke line “Johannes & Jan” writes new stories. A Riesling of red earth and matured in barrique can be found in our wine list at No. 6b.
